Kodak Tri-X 400 (35mm)

The most photographed-with black & white film in history, and still the benchmark everything else is measured against. Kodak Professional Tri-X 400 has been in continuous production since 1954 — it is the film of Robert Frank's The Americans, of Don McCullin's war reportage, of most of the twentieth century's defining photojournalism. What keeps it relevant is not nostalgia but latitude: Tri-X is famously indifferent to being mistreated. Underexpose it, overdevelop it, push it to 1600 or 3200 and it responds with more grit and more character rather than falling apart. Its grain is pronounced, structured and deeply photogenic, and its tonal curve holds highlights far past where it has any right to.
