The Nikon F2 is, by wide agreement, the finest fully mechanical SLR Nikon ever built. Produced from 1971 to 1980 across some 816,000 bodies, it refined everything the original F established: a 1/2000s top shutter speed, a titanium-foil mechanism that runs without a battery at every speed, a swing-open back, and a build quality that has kept these cameras working for fifty years. Fitted here with the DP-2 Photomic finder — the combination Nikon sold as the F2S — and a Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D, Nikon's compact, sharp and much-loved fast normal.

One important point about how this kit works together. The DP-2 finder meters by reading the lens aperture through the external meter-coupling prong — the "rabbit ears" fitted to Nikon's pre-AI lenses. The AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D has no prong, so while it mounts on the F2 and shoots perfectly in full manual with its own aperture ring, the DP-2's meter cannot couple to it. Use a handheld meter or a phone app with this lens, or add any pronged pre-AI Nikkor later and the finder's meter comes into play. Everything here is in excellent order — this is a mechanically superb body, a near-mint modern 50mm, and a kit that will outlast most of what is on sale today.
