The Nikon FM is where Nikon's compact mechanical line began. Launched in 1977 alongside the AI lens standard, it packed a professional-grade titanium-bladed shutter and a proper TTL meter into a body far smaller and cheaper than the F2 — and because the shutter is mechanical, it fires at every speed with a flat battery. Thousands of photographers bought one as a backup and ended up using it as their main camera. Paired here with the Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8, Nikon's compact, sharp and famously good-value fast normal.

Everything works, including the meter. The AF Nikkor is an autofocus lens, but it carries both an aperture ring and the AI coupling ridge, so on the FM it simply becomes a manual-focus 50mm with full open-aperture metering — and it moves straight onto a Nikon autofocus body later if you add one. A mechanical Nikon with clean fast glass is one of the most durable ways to shoot film.
