The Nikon FM2n is the high-water mark of the mechanical 35mm SLR. Nikon gave it a shutter that runs to 1/4000s and flash-synchronises at 1/250s — figures that most electronic cameras of the day could not touch — and did it all with no battery required for the shutter to work. Photojournalists carried these into places where a dead cell would have ended the day. Paired here with the Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8, Nikon's compact and famously sharp fast normal.

Fully working throughout — shutter, meter and timer. The 1/4000s top speed and 1/250s flash sync are what separate the FM2n from every other mechanical SLR of its era: you can shoot fast film wide open in daylight, and balance fill flash against bright sun, neither of which a 1/1000s body manages. The AF Nikkor has an aperture ring and the AI ridge, so it meters at full aperture here and still fits a Nikon autofocus body later.
